Wish you all & my Country "Happy Republic Day"

Though India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, it did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead, its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935, and the country was a Dominion, with George VI as head of state and Earl Mountbatten as Governor General. On August 29, 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr. Ambedkar as the Chairman. A Draft Constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on November 4, 1947. The Assembly met, in sessions open to public, for 166 days, spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution. After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution of India became the law of all the Indian lands. The Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950. Following January 26, 1950, Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India. This was, in fact, a deliberate act, signing the constitution on 26th January, to mark and respect the freedom fighters who wanted 26 January as India's initial independence day.

Sevoke Havoc !

Sevoke is situated at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas alongside National Highway no. 31. The drive from Siliguri to Sevoke through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a memorable one. Sevoke in itself is a tourist destination with visitors from Siliguri flocking the place during weekends. The place is also a must stop for tourists visiting Sikkim, Kalimpong, and the Dooars region. This picture is of the Nandi river just before it flows into the mighty Teesta.

Mongpong is situated on the lofty bank of River Tista, just 35kms from Siliguri. Being so close to the buzzing city Siliguri, Mongpong presents a completely different landscape, where the refreshing greenery soon relieves the stress and hassles of daily city life.Surrounded by thick wooded hills on one side and vast wide basin of Tista River on the other, the Mongpong Forest Rest house is a unique resting place for the nature lovers. Siliguri Junction

Siliguri Junction is where I caught the toy train to Darjeeling in the Himalaya foothills. Siliguri Junction itself is on the coastal plain & is flat. Although many Indians today wear Western clothing like jeans & tshirts, there are still some that wear more traditional garb. These guys are snakecharmers. There are live cobras inside the hessian bags.

Teesta Valley

This was shot from a ridge and a village called Ponbu. Two parts of that village are Upper and Lower Ponbu. After reaching here we got the best view all along this route. From here we can have a fade view of Siliguri (about 30Kms from here).  The waterline seen on my right is Teesta and on my left are three rivers Leesh, Gheesh and Chel.

Story : Three siblings, two sisters and one brother went to the jungle to fetch firewood with their mother. They lost her soon and after a long try all of them meets here.

View : You can see Coronation Bridge, Mahananda Sanctuary, Siliguri City, Gorubathan, Teesta Barriage Project through the clear corridor of 270degrees facing south. To the back (north) is Kalimpong. East and West are clear

Jhalong Valley

Jhalong is a lesser-trodden offbeat wonder of Dooars Himalayan foothills. It is situated on the bank of Jaldhaka river on the way to Bindu in Kalimpong Sub-division.Jhalong is 103 km by road from Siliguri. There is one direct bus from the Mittal bus stand of Siliguri, but it is irregular. It is best to go to Chalsa and then hire a cab to reach Jhalong in approx 2 Hrs journey.
Due to the Jaldhaka hydroelectricity generation plant, Jhalong is small but busy, full of houses and shops. It even boasts a police station just at the entry point to Jhalong. There is a small and placid Buddhist monastery as well. Everything, starting from Chinese food to photo studio is available at the Jhalong market, . Behind the market there is a fair ground where all things of necessity are sold. The locals come there and shop for the whole week. The best accommodation in Jhalong is the beautifully located two room forest bunglow which is situated just besides Jaldhaka river. There are other private hotels as well.

Lachen - “The most beautiful view is the one I share with you…”

It is said that 'a thing of beauty is a joy forever'... the sentiment lends an apt introduction to Lachen village that clings to the grassy mountain slopes of the eastern Himalayas in the state of Sikkim. With many incredible attributes with respect to landscape, people, culture, seasons...and each more fascinating than the other... this Himalayan village in the north east of India, transcends the most ethereal of travel experiences.

Welcome to Dooars

Lying in the Himalayan foothills, Dooars has great natural beauty. The wildlife-rich tropical forests, innumerable hill streams cutting across the green carpet of tea gardens and undulating plains, low hills rising up from the rivers. A drive through the Dooars plains, the gateway of Bhutan and the entire North East of India, can be the experience of a lifetime.
The Dooars valley (also called Duars) stretching from River Teesta on the west to River Sankosh on the east, an area coving roughly 130 km by 40 km, the Dooars forms major part of the Jalpaiguri district.
